"Do you feel any better?" Ai'lani asked the teen walking next to him, who looked a bit pale and worn out. The older man's arms was around his shoulders, leading his son towards DS5's Sickbay. The 15-year old had gotten a fever the the night they'd boarded their transport from Obsidian Command. While having gotten some fever medications, the small clinic on the transport wasn't able to do a whole lot but tie him over until the arrived at their destination. By then, Dominic had developed a bit of a cough and Ai'lani was getting worried about him.

"Not really, dad," Dominic replied, his voice coarse, before he coughed. Ai'lani winced, rubbing his back supportively.

"Well, well, well," Thomas said as he saw the pair walking through the corridor. "Like this base needs more riffraff," he added, walking closer.

Ai'lani turned to the sound of the familiar voice. He raised an eyebrow. "Well, I suppose it doesn't, considering you're here, Whitlock" he said back, crossing his arms over his chest. "Didn't think they'd let you leave 68, what with all that great work you'd been doing there. Who's going to report the prize bingo winners to the people without you there?" he asked with mock drama, resting his hand on his chest.

"I didn't feel right doing your job for you," Thomas countered.

"Oooh, very nice," Ai'lani admitted. "I always liked you, Whitlock. You remind me of me when I was young and stupid," he said, then smirked. "So, what the hell are you doing here?" he asked, but before Thomas could answer, Dominic pulled on his father's sleeve.

"Dad, can I go to Sickbay?" he asked, looking up at the man.

"Oh, sure, Dom," Ai'lani said, giving the teen a padd. "Give that to the CMO, and I'll be with you in a few minutes, okay?" he asked. Dominic nodded before heading to see the doctor.

"Is he okay?" Thomas asked, looking at the boy as he walked away.

"I think he's got flu from one of his classmates before we left Obsidian Command. The doctors on the transport we were on weren't well equipped since it was just a couple of days of travel," Ai'lani explained. "His fever is down, but he's got a cough," he said.

"I thought maybe he'd managed to read one of your stories," Thomas said. "I don't want to keep you if there's something wrong with him."

"Oh, he'll be fine," Ai'lani assured him, his curiosity taking over. "So, are you passing through or staying?" he asked, deciding to let his first comment slide.

"I've settled in for the long run," Thomas said to him. "What about you?"

"Ohh...I'm settling in too. Family and everything," Ai'lani grinned mischievously. ~This should be fun.~ he thought to himself.

"I didn't know the base had a tabloid," Thomas said to him. "It must be true though if you're here as a writer."

"Oh, please, you secretly hope at night a tabloid would take you. Don't forget I've actually read your writing. The entire two pages," Ai'lani retorted.

Thomas laughed and slapped the man on the back. "It's good to see you again. This place can use a little comic relief."

"I'm sure, considering the amount of tears your writing brings to people's eyes," Ai'lani grinned, patting Whitlock's arm good-naturedly. "So, guess I'll see you around then, Whitlock," he said, knowing he had to get back to his son.

Thomas smiled and extended his hand. "We'll have to get together later to get caught up."

"Definitely," Ai'lani nodded, taking his hand and shaking it firmly. Giving him a final slap on the shoulder, he said, "Bye, Tom!" With that, he turned and hurried to Sickbay.

Thomas watched him walk away, then turned and walked in the other direction, smiling and shaking his head.
