Judgement – Temporary Reprieve
by Commander Karen Villiers
The depositions kept coming.
Karen stood and walked over to the replicator, her brow creased in thought.
"Espresso," she requested tucking her hair back behind her ears as she watched the little blue cup and saucer appear, a whisp of steam rising from the dark oily pool. She reached for the saucer and carried it back to her desk placing it among among the padds that littered the surface.
Was there a case to be heard? That was the first question to be answered.
Every new piece of evidence Karen received seemed to swing her decision only for the next piece to reset the balance. Gabriel appeared to have no friends yet people offered evidence in his favour. For an hour the Ronulan case began to look circumstantial and fabricated then an irrefutable Federation source would offer corroboration of facts.
It was the most puzzling case Karen had weighed in years.
The second question was more complicated - the list of possible charges now included not only murder, but assault, harassment, hate crimes, torture … violations not only of Federation law but of the statutes of most 'civilised' regimes - officially, at least. What was admissable, what was hearsay, what was fact?
One thing was becoming very clear and that was that the trial could not go ahead today.
This necessary postponement was sure to cause issues. Karen was sure that the prosecution would make their dissatisfaction known, and whilst it was another day that might provide the impetus for the case being thrown out Gabriel had another day of uncertainty to look forward to.
Karen lifted the cup and drained the espresso in one – she had a memo to write informing the interested parties of the decision.
