Beg, Steal or Borrow – Surprise Package
by Lieutenant Vincent Tan
"Commander, we're receiving a message from Deep Space 5," Ensign Black announced to the bridge of the USS Thor. "It's coded urgent and for the Admiral only. What should we do?"
Commander Crura pondered this for a moment. She knew the Admiral was in his quarters, probably about to fall asleep or writing a log or catching up on some important paperwork. But she also knew that only Commander Tan would need to take such precautions with his communications. In the split second it had taken her to formulate this thought, she had already given the order for the Admiral to be called.
"It's quite large for a simple communicaiton," the communicatons ensign conjectured to pass the time.
"Who says it's a simple communication, Mr. Black?" the Andorian XO asked. "It may be something top secret about the attack or the suspects or something..."
"I think it's simple, Commander," the ensign replied. "It's quite short - only a few seconds - and was transmitted with only standard encryption. I hardly think that it is that top secret. I wonder why it is for the Admiral only?"
"You may well wonder, Mr. Black," Commander Crura said, stopping short of reprimanding the communications officer because her own curiosity was growing. She heard the whoosh of the doors behind her. "Admiral on the bridge!"
"Yes?" Admiral Xelec Uhlan asked grumpily as he walked onto the bridge. He waved the stump of his left arm towards the screen. "What is it Commander?"
"A message from DS5, sir," Ensign Black said. "It's for you only."
"Thank you, Ensign. I'll read it in my ready room," the Admiral said, replacing his prothesis as he left to the stares of the remainder of the bridge crew. Some were curious about the content of this short secret message, whilst others had never seen their commanding officer without his prothesis before.
In the privacy of his ready room, Admiral Uhlan locked the doors and made a physical backup of the message before ordering his computer to play it.
"USS Thor, this is Vincent Tan of the good old Deep Space 5. We are planning to launch some fighters to inspect the Romulan wreckage and require you to maintain an eye out for hostile activity. If you have a problem with this package of requests, please notify DS5 immediately."
Xelec counted the key words. "Good", "maintain" and "package". It meant that Vincent was onboard and alright and would maintain his current position. He had also alluded to an additional message "packaged" with the one Xelec had just received. With some minor filtering and decompression, Xelec was able to extract a text file embedded in the verbal communication. It was Vincent's first report.
Smiling, Xelec made his way back onto the bridge. "Mr. Black, inform Deep Space 5 that their message has been received and acknowledged. Tell them that we maintain our station and keep our eyes and ears peeled for signs of activity."
Once more, Admiral Uhlan left a bridge full of curious faces.
