OLD
The Cardassians in the lobby saw her coming, and let her in automatically. Lemat was not on duty this early; the night shift attendant, a bluff and friendly young man who struck her as barely old enough to shave gave her a broad smile of welcome. "Morning, Ketan. Is he free?" she asked him. She didn't have to say who, they all knew. And she didn't have to ask if he was awake at such an early hour. He didn't sleep.

"Let me check. Is it anything in particular?"

She nodded. "Tell him I want him to find who killed Klia. Tell him, I want him to serve me their heart on a plate."

Ketan thumbed the intercom, unsure where the Vi'Kar Gul would be at this hour. "Sir, Miss Ibalin is asking for you. Where would you like me to send her?"

"My quarters." Came the reply quickly. Tharek had no love for any of the 'lesser' staff. But as long as they done their job, he was content.

Yolanthe smiled at Ketan as the reply came over the intercom. She put her communicator on the desk. "I know the way." The guard stood aside as she walked down the corridor into the heart of the consulate. Arriving at Tharek's private quarters, she knocked, and stepped inside.

"Welcome back." He greeted her with a smile, but the smile was soon replaced with grimace. "This is about Klia, isn't it?"

Her colours darkened, till she was greyer than he was. She wasn't going to cry in front of him, but her guts twisted. She crossed to him, and hugged him close for a moment, not trusting herself to say anything. Eventually she said. "We have to talk. I had a visit from Trellis earlier."

"I've spoken to Trellis already. I believe he thinks me a serious suspect. But when a Cardassian gives his word, they follow that word through. I gave him my word that I did not harm Klia, nor have I ever physically." Tharek defended. "I will find whoever did this Yolanthe. Not for her. For you."

She rested her head on his shoulder. "I know you didn't. I tried to tell him that. But he didn't listen. He wasn't interested. He seemed fixed on you. He was the same opening night, only interested in the Romulan's not the rioters. He's cut in gabriel's cloth - he's only interested in persecuting aliens, and I think he's gunning for you."

"He can gun all he like. I have the law, loyalty and you behind me. And if he does some how get to me, or even you again, I'll rip his head from his shoulders and personally show it to every family member he has before I fall."

She couldn't help but smile, and for a moment, she was blue and not grey. She loved his passion and earnestness. "I hope that won't be necessary. I'd rather he didn't touch you at all."

She sat down on his bed. "Did he mention anything to you about who might have done it, any evidence at all?"

"None. Besides make it look like I was the murderer. I don't trust the Federation's way of finding information out anyway. I'll do it. I'll find who did it, and drag them to your feet, begging for mercy." Tharek was trailing off into a dark world, but kept anchored by holding Yolanthe tighter.

She returned his embrace, stroking his hair in reassurance. "Its getting messy. I've got Trellis breathing down your neck, and Gabriel getting his knickers in a twist over those fights you took part in. I've lost Klia. I'll not let the bastards touch you."

"You have nothing to worry about my love." He went silent after that word. A man in Getal's position can't afford to love anyone. Love is weakness. Love can be taken away with great pain. But he didn't care any more. He stopped caring when he became the Order. "I'm here."
