Judgement – Captain, we may have a problem
by Alderman Dorian Gabriel & Captain Tasha Tahir (NPC) & Commander Karen Villiers & Ambassador Cala Lurn
ON:
"I'm here to see Captain Tahir" Lieutenant Trellis stated to the officer sitting at the desk as he nervously tapped the Padd against the side of his pants leg.
He looked down his nose to he leg of the security officer then back up to his stern face.
"I take it you don't have an appointment?" Robert questioned with a hint of sarcasm.
"Tell her that Lieutenant Trellis is here to see her." He replied.
"Aye, sir." Robert replied, signaling the Captain that the acting security chief needed to see her.
"Send him straight up." Tasha replied as she stood, stretching her arms to the ceiling, circling her head around against the stiffness in her neck.
She began to edge towards the door, but Trellis beat her to the entrance.
"Lieutenant, I didn't expect to see you so soon. Come in." She offered, sweeping her hand along the room.
As he entered the room he took a deep breathe before responding to the Commanding Officer. "Captain, I think it would be best if we invited the Diplomacy Officer as well as Commander Villiers to this meeting" he replied.
"Best?" She questioned as the Chief pushed the door closed behind him. This worried Tasha, it usually signaled a secret or a debate or some form of argument was about to ensue. "Why?" She added as he turned to look at her, a look of morbid disdain on his face.
". . .because Captain, I think we may have a problem." he said cautiously.
"A security problem?" She asked rhetorically as her hand went to her comm. "Lieutenant Totti is not back yet, but Ambassador Cala Lurn is already aboard, though not yet officially ensconced in the Diplomatic duty roster." Her hand leveled to the woman sat in the chair at Tasha's desk.
----
Karen rested her chin on her hands, her first reading of the appeal had left her in something of a quandary. Yes, some of the evidence might be dismissed on the grounds that it was procured through illegal means, but when put with the other evidence it clearly pointed towards the use of torture. If it was dismissed then the battleground shifted - Starfleet would be on the hook and accused of a cover-up, and the Romulans would take matters into their own hands.
Her second reading had done little to provide clarity. Putting her own opinion aside Karen viewed the evidence from each side, trying to put herself in the mindset of Gabriel, of the Romulans, of a civilian jury but she invariably came back to the same conclusion.
"What?" she snapped as ops contacted her.
"Sorry to disturb you, Commander," Lieutenant Bennett said, "Captain Tahir has asked if you can join her meeting."
Karen pursed her lips and considered that for a moment. A break might give her a new perspective she had not yet managed to see, "I'll be there in five," she replied and cut the channel.
---
". . .and based on such evidence I found probable cause to place Yolanthe Ibalin under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder. Now, based upon the evidence, I possess probable cause to place Ambassador Tharek Getal under arrest for his involvement in the murder of Ms. Kila." he said as the other entered the room.
Sitting back letting the two officer's talk, Cala was shocked on what was going on. Romulans of course are up to something, they have always been up to something for years. She was slightly worried about. She interrupted the conversation and stated, "How do I fit in to all of this? What do I need to do?"
Karen had listened from by the door. She had not yet met the woman who asked the question. "Do you have evidence that the Cardassian Ambassador was involved?" she asked Trellis. He would cry 'diplomatic immunity' but that was a fragile shield to hide behind.
Tasha turned and gave Karen an acknowledging smile. She was intrigued by Trellis' statement and was more than happy to let her XO take the lead, but gave a quick introduction.
"Commander Villiers, Embassy consultant Cala Lurn." Tashas hand moved sidewards between the two as she made her way to the replciator, listening to the rest of the 'Evidence' that Trellis was presenting.
Trellis nodded. "Indeed, my investigation conducted by my. . I mean the Security Department as well as my consultation with Dr. Stapleton have presented evidence that the weapon used to cause Ms. Kila's wounds left marks that are conclusively similar to daggers used by the Cardassian military, particularly those of higher rank." he stated as he handed the padd to the Commander Villiers.
Karen accepted the padd and scrolled through the data - the few times she'd been confronted by the Cardassian Ambassador did nothing to warm her to him, but she thought him more an arrogant relic than a danger. Still, the weapon was a pointer, but then there were many collectors of bladed weapons on the station, and at least one shop dedicated to their supply.
"Circumstantial," she said, "I could buy a replica tomorrow and if I wanted to wait a bit longer the real thing. Anything else?" Karen asked.
"In addition to that, there has been DNA evidence recovered near the scene of the crime matched both the Cardassian Ambassador and that of Yolanthe Ibalin." he stated affirmatively.
She looked again at the padd then directly at Trellis, "Remind me again where that was," she suggested, "I think you covered that before I came in." She also had some thin ground to tread here, Getal had involved himself in the case against Trellis's former superior, and presented the wrong way this could be seen as a deliberate attempt by the Federation to discredit evidence against one of their own by going after the source.
"Certainly," Trellis said as he walked to a nearby wall-monitor and brought up a schematic of the station. "One of the officers within Security found a piece of torn clothing that tests revealed belong to Cardassian attire. Further tests indicate that the blood found within the fibers have a conclusive match to that of Ambassador Getal." Trellis said as the schematic zeroed in on the corridor just outside Ms. Kila's room.
"Unfortunately, sensors in that area were non-functional, therefore we have not visual or audio evidence of crime scene." He added. "However, I have interviewed both suspects and they do acknowledge that there was an altercation between the three of them shortly before Ms. Kila's death that involved her discovering a secret that they had hidden from her much to her chagrin." He stated.
Tasha spoke. "So she admits they had some sort of fight, but it's a long way from murder!" She stated taking a sip of the tea that she had ordered.
Karen nodded in acknowledgement, but her thoughts were elsewhere. "Do we know what caused the sensors not to function?" in Karen's mind a murderer who had taken steps to disable sensors would also take steps to cover his trail. It would fall to her to issue the warrant if there was to be one, and she needed to know that everything had been explored.
"We can further ascertain that information once we have the suspects within the confines of Security. From there we can further question them." Trellis responded. "I have already placed Ms. Ibalin under arrest. I've come here because I understand that placing the Ambassador under confinement would be a much, much more complicated issue for both security and station command." He said to the gathered group.
"You're not wrong. It will be a lot more complicated," Karen gave her agreement. She somehow doubted that the Ambassador was the co-operative type, but it was an approach that might yield returns, "invite him in for questioning and see if he co-operates. If he comes and then changes his mind about 'helping' then we notify the Cardassian government to instruct him to help our investigation otherwise we'll start expelling diplomats on grounds of espionage. They'll bluster a bit, but they'll agree."
Trellis nodded as he deactivated the wall panel.
=^= "Trellis to Security, send a team to meet me outside of the Cardasssian Embassy. Trellis out." =^=
=^= "Aye, sir" =^= the female responded from the other end of the comm link.
Here we go again, Karen thought, if the Cardassian Ambassador behaved anything like he had during the vole incident on the promenade Trellis was on for a hard time.
"Ma'am, I'm not sure what to expect when dealing with the Ambassador. It is my hope that he will be more cooperative than he has in the past." Trellis responded as he awaited to be dismissed.
"We'll have to wait and see, but somehow, I doubt it." Tasha responded, "Thank you Lieutenant." Tasha said in allowing Trellis to carry on.
She turned to Karen and nodded. "Thank you for your assistance Commander. I don't think you have been formally introduced." Her hand rose to Cala. "Federation Envoy, Cala Lunn. my First officer, Commander Karen Villiers."
Karen nodded. "If you'll excuse me I have some very fast talking to do to make sure this situation doesn't become explosive," she said. "Welcome aboard - you've found us on a quiet day," she said to Lunn before taking her leave and departing.
"Good luck!" Tasha said as she watched Karen leave and turned to Cala. "Quiet day? No day on Deep Space five is quiet. Welcome aboard." She grinned.
"Thank you Captian," smiled Cala, "I don't expect anything less."
