Judgement – Unwelcome task
by Lieutenant Commander Jarred Wallace
On:
USS Empress dropped out of warp looking like a smudge on the massive yellow radioactive mass, the reason they arrived was adrift about two thousand meters outside the nebula and its infamous radioactive clouds. The Bluish white light of a tractor beam grabbed the Serenity and began the difficult task of pulling the ship away from the nebula in order to avoid itself being pulled into the nebula's radioactive clouds.
The first away team beamed aboard only to discover a good portion of the crew survived, but not unaffected by the radiation of the outer clouds. There were exceptions though, as they made there way to the bridge they found more crew dead of dying, it wasn't until they arrived on the bridge that the full extent of the disaster became evident, the captain, a helmsman and one other crew were the only ones on the bridge, the captain was clearly dead, the helmsman had taken a heavy dose of radiation, and the other crewman was fairing no better.
As the rescue teams continued to survey the ship they found some survivors and just as many victims, they were puzzled by the number of survivors, every story they had heard about the nebula was you got in you never came out.
A damage control soon found an answer to that mystery. Ships traveling at warp 7 long enough to clear the outer layers of the nebula you can survive the lethal radiation, but something went horribly wrong on the serenity, at that became more evident when the shuttle bay was finally cleared. It was as if something had blown out the door itself explosively.
It was so radioactive the damage control party was going to need to spend a day in decontamination. Other discoveries included reports of an alien space station inside the nebula, and a large number of artifacts recovered including some body parts.
As the survivors were transferred to medical ships or other transports The Empress took the now crippled ship in tow. Starfleet had ordered her transferred to deep space five for the interim until a decision about her fate could be made.
