Finally pushing himself off the couch, Kaelin was about ready to call it a night when the door chime rang out, startling him. Blinking a few times in surprise, the Deltan uselessly ran a hand over his shirt to straighten out the wrinkles and walked to the door.

Opening it, he was surprised to find Dominic on his doorstep, looking kind of miserable and irritated.

“Dominic. What’s the matter? Are you okay?” he asked, concern filling his tone as he let the boy inside.

“It’s dad. He’s miserable,” the teenager explained with frustration.

Kaelin frowned, but didn’t know what to say. He knew Ai’lani didn’t like upsetting anyone, and he wasn’t really in the right mindset to handle something as big as what they’d gone through that day.

“Do you want me to go see him?” he offered, already looking around for his shoes. Dominic frowned, shrugging.

“I don’t know. I just thought…maybe you could help him. I can’t do anything. He won’t talk to me. I mean, he tried to pretend like everything is okay at dinner, but you know how lousy a liar he is.”

Kaelin nodded, knowing that very well. Ai’lani had the reputation of constantly wearing his heart on his sleeve, as humans would say. He was like an open book to anyone who could be bothered to look. “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to him. Are you okay?” he asked, reaching over to the teenager and giving his arm a comforting squeeze.

“I’m fine. I just hate seeing him so depressed and out of it,” Dominic admitted, hating the feeling of helplessness he was forced into.

“Don’t worry, sweetie,” Kaelin told him. “I’ll go over tonight. You can stay here. Is that okay?” Dominic nodded, giving the Deltan a grateful smile.

“Thanks, Kay,” he said and Kaelin pulled him into a comforting hug. The teenager wrapped his arms around Kaelin’s waist, giving the older man a squeeze as he soaked up the comfort the Deltan was obviously giving him.

The pull away from each other comfortably and Kaelin pulled his shoes on. “One second. I’ll tell Phillip you’re here,” he told Dominic before going to see his roommate.

Dominic sat down on the couch, running his hands through his hair tiredly. A few minutes later Kaelin came out of the hallway again, followed by a short redheaded human wearing a baggy shirt and some pajama bottoms.

“Hey, Dominic,” Phillip greeted the teen. “Kaelin said you could stay in his room tonight. You want me to get you something before bed?” he asked as he watched Kaelin pull on his jacket.

Dominic shook his head. “No, thank you. I’m just kind of tired. I think I’ll turn in, if that’s okay.”

“Sure.” Phillip nodded.

“Alright, I’m going to stay with Lani for the night. He’ll be as good as new by morning. I promise,” Kaelin told the worried teenager as Phillip watched on.

“Thanks, Kaelin,” Dominic said again. Kaelin waved it off before leaving the quarters. Phillip looked over at the teen, the new silence now awkward.

“He’s a really nice guy,” Dominic suddenly said, watching the door Kaelin disappeared through. The corner of his mouth quirking up in a smile, Phillip nodded in agreement. “Yeah, he is. Come on, I’ll show you to your room,” he told the boy before leading him up the two steps into the corridor.
