Cascade – Big trouble in Little China

Bringing her hand up to her mouth, Welshy attempted to stifle a yawn. She wasn't particularly successful. After arriving on station as late as they had, she had put Gwen down to bed before putting away the majority of the belongings the family had carried with them. She hadn't gone to bed until close to 0500, and was back up a few hours later when Gwen came crashing in like a tiny wild animal.
Thankfully, with a facility as large as DS5, there was a sizable school and daycare facility for the children of both the Starfleet personnel and civilians. For the time being, Gwen was in the day care, but it would only be a few months before she entered kindergarten. That very thought made Welshy feel extremely old.
With Steve working on the mystery ship locked up in one of the hangers and no assistant chief, it fell to Welshy as engineer's mate to keep the department running smoothly. It was a task she was well used to, having performed the same role on the Hyperion (both "D" and "E") and the Freedom.
But at the moment, lack of sleep and a nagging feeling of unease were throwing her off her A game. She could neither explain it, nor place it, but she just felt like there was something wrong about the base. Seeing Steve come through, give orders not to be disturbed, and lock himself in his office certainly didn't help matters. She had rung his door chime, but he didn't even respond. A short time later, he had left just as abruptly, telling a junior enlisted man to "hold down the fort", as if the more senior rating who shared his life for over ten years wasn't even there.
She had wanted to go after him, but that feeling in the back of her mind kept her from doing so. This was rapidly becoming one of those moments when she wished she had enough Betazoid in her blood for it to actually amount to something, so that she might actually be able to figure out what the frak was going on around here.
'Damn it Steve... what the Hell have we gotten ourselves into?' she thought.
