Interlude – Next on the List

A few slugs of rich, peaty Irish had settled Pip’s stomach. She lingered a little longer at the bar listening to snippets of conversation through the background murmur of voices.
It wouldn’t be too hard, she thought to pick up some casual work – like the bartender said, a place like this had all sorts of restaurants – something to keep her in credits if Deep Space Five turned out not to be the place.
Lost in thought Pip rolled her empty glass on the bar, the rim beneath her palm. She did not have the sort of resources that allowed access to detailed personal records, so she used what was available through the public information systems; old news reports and broadcasts, history books, press releases. She hung around in bars frequented by veterans and listened to their gossip and slowly she had pieced together a list of ten Cardassians who had been stationed near Eden at the time of the atrocity. With more painstaking research she uncovered where they were now – nine names, the tenth was already dead. Nine names and nine locations.
Two of the nine had already been crossed off her list, they might have been guilty of something, but Pip was not out for indiscriminate revenge, so she moved on to the next one. There was only one man responsible for the slaughter, and though she did not know his name she knew that she would know him when she saw him.
