Judgement – A death in the family. . .

The body slumped to the deck. Empty eyes stared blindly into the eyes of the killer. The body on the floor had slumped, awkwardly, and the killer looked down with a look of earnest contrition. She had been beautiful, before. She was still, in her own lifeless way. Even as the skin paled while blood seeped into the carpet.
"I'm sorry," the killer intoned in a voice that really did seem remorseful, "but I had to."
~~~Hours Later~~~
"She was reaching for her comm badge. . ." the voice said.
When security had arrived, they found Petty Officer Vaughn's legs splayed behind her, with her head cushioned awkwardly on the bulkhead as her chin pressed into her chest. Her once white blouse was stained with blood, which originated from a small hole that pierced the fatty tissue of one breast, through the ribcage, the heart and penetrated her back. It was a kind of wound now antiquated, but familiar enough--nine millimeter.
Trellis took in the scene before him for several moments. He was unable to fully comprehend what type of monster could be capable of such brutality in this day and age.
"She was reaching for her comm badge. . ." the voice said.
Trellis himself had been spared the more gruesome horrors of the Dominion War as a result of him graduating from the Academy in the latter-half of the devastating event. The most action he had experienced was during the evacuation of San Francisco during the Breen's raid and Starfleet's subsequent clean-up and repairs efforts.
But this. . .this was a level of savagery that he had not witnessed save for his holo-training sessions.
"Sir. . ." the voice said again, jarring Trellis from his thoughts.
"Yes, Ensign?" he responded, attempting to remain focused on the present.
"Sir, I said that it appears she was reaching for her comm badge." the Ensign stated as he continued to kneel over the body.
". . .who could have done this. ..?" Trellis asked in a low whisper. His fist balled upon on their own as he looked at the gathered officers within the murder scene.
"I want to find the bastard who is responsible for killing one of our own officers, and I want him found NOW!" he said passionately.
