Lash pushed the chime on the door to the quarters Kaelin shared with Phillip. Then stood back, hopping from foot to foot. He was starving, and Kaelin had promised to keep the rabbit food to a minimum.
The doors opened and a short redheaded young man greeted Lash. He looked him up and down and, despite his size, he seemed to look down his nose at the half-Vulcan.
"Oh, it's you. What the hell are you doing here?" he asked directly. Before Lash could respond, Kaelin came into the doorway, giving his roommate a look. "He's here for dinner with me. Since you two haven't been...properly introduced, Lash, this is Phillip, Phillip this is Lash," he introduced them hastily.
"Lash? Are you fucking serious?"
"Yes, and Phillip was just leaving," Kaelin said pointedly to his roommate, pushing him outside the apartment. "Hey! I need my wallet!" he said indignantly and had the leather object tossed at him before Kaelin pulled Lash inside and closed the door.
"So..." the Deltan began awkwardly. "Hi!"
"Hi." He turned and looked after Phillips retreating bulk. "That is why Ops and Engineering tend to not get on." He held up a large bottle of clear liquid. "I figures you were no fun with drinks either, so I got this from the Box of Delights. Its Vulcan Spring water. They use it to make ice cubes!" he said, aghast at something as precious as Vulcan water being used in such away.
Kaelin made an offended look in agreement, taking the bottle from Lash. "Thank you, that's very sweet," he said with a smile, leading Lash into the living room. "Dinner will be ready in a little bit, would you like a drink? Just because I'm no fun, doesn't mean you can't have anything. I have some red wine if you'd like?"
Lash shook his head. And then promptly yawned. "Better not, I'm still lagged from my shift change. I'm normally in bed by now, so if I have anything to drink I'll probalby just pass out in the dessert."
"Alright," Kaelin nodded, pouring them both a glass of the spring water, smiling at Lash lovingly, thinking how cute he was when he yawned and then scolding himself for how teenage that thought sounded.
"We are having dessert aren't we? I haven't eaten anything in hours. I could eat a whole targ. Raw, with my hands."
Kaelin laughed. "Well I'm afraid I couldn't catch a targ on such short notice, but there will be dessert. Chocolate truffles. I'm not having any, but you are."
"ooh, sounds ominous. Are they poisoned?" Lash gave Kaelin a wickedly naughty grin, "Going to drug me and have your wicked way with me?"
"Of course! Why else would I bring you here?" Kaelin asked, sitting down next to Lash now and clinking his glass to the younger man's.
"Excellent," Lash looked very happy. "Bring on the truffles."
Kaelin laughed. "You are shameless aren't you?" he asked, shaking his head.
"Yup." Lash nodded in agreement. "You're only young once, enjoy every minute."
"Well, come on then. Let's go eat before you decide you can't control yourself and begin enjoying every minute right now with me," Kaelin joked, standing up and leading Lash to the dining room, where a table was set for two. It was set simply, with a white tableclothes and just a small vase with a red rose at the center. "Pick a seat," Kaelin told him and once they'd set themselves down, Kaelin motioned proudly to their food. "See? No rabbit food. Well, not much," he told him. And really, the food didn't really look like anything Kaelin would usually eat. There were a few things Lash didn't recognise and most of the dishes were seafood.
"Not unless the bunny can scuba dive!" Lash agreed, picking up a fork, and examining which of the items on his plate was to be speared first.
"Since you're a bit of a risk taker, I'm going to tell you something. Three of these things on the table are poisonous if they aren't cooked right. So, enjoy," Kaelin told him with a wicked grin.
"Does that mean if I pick right I'll get mouth to mouth?"
"Possibly," Kaelin said, flirty all of a sudden as he looked around nonchalantly.
"Hmmmm," Lash studied the plate intently. "This is like playing Russian Roulette," He jabbed his fork into a medallion of white flake fish about 3 cms across, dipped it into the dollop of yello sauce next to it, and put it gingerly into his mouth, looking at Kaelin with a little hesitancy as he chewed.
"Hmmm....Guess again," Kaelin said, grinning widely. "Is it good?" he asked as an afterthought.
"Fabulous," Lash mumbled through a full mouth. "Really good." He took a sip of his water. "Well since this is roulette, your hcoice next."
Kaelin laughed before going for a vegetable dish, the roasted vegetables looking like a mix of avocado and pineapple.
"No! You're doing that all wrong." lash laughed, "I know that's safe to eat now." he scooped up his own portion. "Mmm, sweet and oily!"
Kaelin laughed, taking a small bite of his meal. "Well, I have a confession to make," he said conspiratorially.
Lash sucked some oil of his finger distractedly, "Oh yes?"
"I'm an excellent cook and nothing here will kill you," Kaelin said with a mock defeated sigh.
"Oh." Lash gave a moue of dissapointment. "So no chance of Mouth to Mouth or wicked ways then?"
"Well, I couldn't kill you before giving you the truffles, could I?" Kaelin winked.
"I'm glad you're being so restrained." Lash began to tuck into his meal with gusto.
Kaelin laughed, turning his attention to his food too. Although it all looked fattening and tasted great, Kaelin had kept the calorie count as low as he could. And he was happy to see Lash enjoying it, even if he didn't know it was all good for him.
"So, what do you want to do after dinner? We could watch something?" he suggested.
"Sure. Any preferences?"
"Well, I like heavy dramas, but since you're the guest, you can pick," Kaelin allowed, spooning some fish into his plate.
"Action adventure," Lash confessed. "Phasers, explosions, pointless electrc guitar."
Kaelin's smile widened. "Fine, I'm sure we can find something in the database under 'pointless electric guitar'," the Deltan said. They ate the rest of their dinner in comfortable small talk and, after getting rid of the dishes and putting the leftovers away, Kaelin told Lash to go and pick out something from the database for them to watch while he got dessert for them.
"Got it!" Lash told Kaelin when the Deltan returned. "Absolute Classic, Remake of the Dirty Dozen, set in the federation-Klingon War of 2267. Has everything, including the electric guitar." the half-vulcan, half-risian young man put his feet up on the coffee table and settled back into the couch in Kaelin's living area. "Electric Guitar. Sign of quality!"
"Definitely," Kaelin said, shaking his head to himself as he set the serving plate filled with colorful chocolate truffles down onto the coffee table. "Hope Phillip doesn't come back and catch you with your feet up on his coffee table," he said with a chuckle. "I'll be right back, I have to go put some food in Phoebe's bowl." As he said this, the Deltan already made his way to another room.
"Phoebe?!" Lash called out, shouting a little over the sound of the opening credits. "You never said you had a pet?"
"You never asked. I have a guinea pig. You know, from Earth," Kaelin said from his bedroom. After a moment, he came out carrying a ginger guinea pig that was happily munching on a baby carrot that Kaelin was holding for it. It's coat was a little longer than normal, forming a peculiar mohawk on its head.
"Cute," Lash said. "Do you have to put wax on her to get her hair to stand up like that?" he asked with a wink.
Kaelin laughed. "No, it just kind of stays like that. She's had it since she was a baby. Go on, get out of here. Go play," Kaelin told the guinea pig as he put her down onto the ground, leaving the door to his room open. He went back to Lash, taking a moist towelette from a box on the end table and wiping his hands. "I named her after Phillip, actually. He's Phillip Benaiah, so Pheobe kind of fits. Plus, she's a ginger, squeaky voiced little rodent so that fits too."
Lash laughed out loud, "miaow!" then he shrugged. "Lets not talk about him. We're missing the good bits." He threw a cushion to the end of the couch, making room for Kaelin next to him. "Come sit down and pass me those truffles!"
Smiling, Kaelin settled himself into the couch next to Lash and picked up the dish of truffles, handing it to the half-Vulcan.
Lash sunk back into the cushions, melting a truffle in his mouth whlst the images from the film flashed, trying ni to drift off. "Mmm, these are good."
"Yeah, I made them myself," Kaelin told him, reaching over to take a small one and starting to nibble on it as he settled back into the back of the couch. They sat like that for the next half hour, with Kaelin's head ultimately ending up on Lash's shoulder once the two got comfortable.
They watched the film in companionable silence, but as the credits rolled, Kaelin could here a gentle rumble emanating from Lash's nose.
Turning his head, Kaelin felt a fond smile rise on his face as he saw Lash had fallen asleep. As gently as he could, he moved away from him, careful not to wake him. Such care seemed unnecessary, however, when Kaelin realised that, apparently, Lash slept like the dead. In fact, it was quite easy to maneuver him into a lying position and sticking a pillow under his head. Taking a soft blanket, Kaelin put it over Lash's thin frame, tucking him in. The only noise Lash made was an incohrent mumble as he turned to face the back of the couch, tugging the blanket over his head and snuggling down.
Kaelin's smile widened and he lifted himself up, standing to tiny the room. Half an hour later, as he was cleaning up the kitchen, he heard the front doors open and soon Phillip came into the kitchen, getting himself a glass of water from the replicator. "There's a teenager sleeping on our couch," he stated, taking a sip.
"He's not a teenager. He'll be 22 next month."
"Oh, well, excuse me," Phillip said sarcastically before downing the water and putting the glass down. "Get rid of that, would you, I'm going to bed."
"Sure. Don't break your back, I'll do it," Kaelin muttered after him as the redhead left the kitchen and he put the glass into the recycler. Finishing up, he went back into the living room and checked on Lash. Smiling, he leaned down and kissed the top of his head that was still visible over the blanket. "Night," he whispered.
