We All Fall Down – Closer than friends & enemies

[ON:]
Cardassian Ambassador Hydel Turvan pressed the chime button and waited for several moments before receiving a response.
Mikaela Locke was deeply engrossed in reviewing the station's intelligence history, when the chime sounded. She had found the record-keeping of her predecessor to be adequate, if slightly lacking in detail. As her eyes scanned across the lines of text before her, she absorbed the information with due care and attention. Usually when she was in this sort of mood, she wouldn't tolerate interruptions, however, she was also aware that she was in a new role now and, whether she liked it or not, interaction with others was a key component of her role - and that interaction might need to come even when she wished to be left alone.
She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath before closing the lid of her desktop terminal. "Enter," she called, taking care not to allow her annoyance at being interrupted to come across in her voice.
Ambassador entered the non-descript office and looked around briefly before coming towards the available chair. "Good afternoon, Lieutenant," Turvan smiled as he took a seat across from the officer. "I'm not sure we've met before, I'm the Ambassador for the Cardassian Union, Hydel Turvan." He said as he extended his hand.
Mikaela stood and paused, briefly looking up and down between the Cardassian's face and his outstretched hand, before eventually deciding that the most prudent course of action might be to accept the greeting. Slightly reluctantly, she reached out and loosing clasped her hand in his, before pulling away as quickly as seemed socially acceptable. "I'm pleased to meet you Ambassador," she said,
"I felt the urge to come welcome a newcomer to the station, especially someone who has also served on Starbase Protector." Ambassador Turvan said. "So what exactly brings you to my humble part of the Galaxy?" the Cardassian asked.
'That was an odd choice of phrase' Mikaela thought to herself - perhaps just a freudian slip - but interesting none the less.
"I was assigned here," she replied, choosing not to mention the comment. "I prefer starbase assignments to starships," she continued faux-lightly, "And Deep Space Five was available." She smiled sweetly. "It's not a very exciting story, I'm afraid."
She paused and observed Turvan for a few moments. Was this really just a courtesy call? Her experience of Cardassians was limited, it was true, but from everything she had learned, they rarely did anything 'just because'. What did he want?
"I'm sorry, Mister Turvan," she continued breezily, "You mentioned you also served on Protector? I'm afraid I don't remember you." That was true. It was, of course, possible that Turvan served either before or after her posting, but certainly not while she was there.
Turvan smiled at the woman. "Please, call me Turvan. And yes, I served as the Chief Ambassador on the station for some time. I had quite a few run-ins with Lieutenant Commander Tebroc Nhoj during my time on the station." He said referring to the 'Cardassian' who seemed to be ashamed of his own heritage.
"I'm sure you will have your hands full on this station. Underground fight rings, unsolved murders, conspiracies to overthrown Station Command, and that's just within the Diplomats!" Turvan said with a hearty laugh.
"Have you had a chance to visit several of our entertainment venues onboard: The Box of Delights, owned by a Yolanthe Ibalin and a Dilithium Chamber owned by a Mr. Melvyn Raddon. I'm certain your Intelligence duties will lead you there sooner or later." He said intentionally.
"I'm sure they will," Mikaela replied with a smile, noting the deliberate emphasis the ambassador had placed on the establishment's names. Whilst the tone of the conversation was warm and the expressions pleasant, Mikaela had already begun to feel like this was a game - and she assumed that Turvan knew it too. The question, however, remained: what was he really after? Was it simply to establish whether she could be manipulated into furthering whatever schemes he was planning, or was it something deeper than that?
"Although," she continued, "being new here means there's a lot of work to be done in order to get caught up," she sat back in her chair, clasping her hands together in her lap, "It may be a while before I have enough the time to begin frequenting 'entertainment venues'."
"Well Lieutenant, I'm sure there is a lot that we can do to help one another. For starters, there's been talk around the station of some type of weapon smuggling ring taking place. How else would you explain the presence of the Marshal Service onboard?" He stated, tossing out a lead.
"How else, indeed," Mikaela replied with a smile, "Although I'm sure that if Mister Steiner wishes to share his motives for being on the station with me, then he will." Of course, she was fairly sure that she would be able to discover those motives whether the marshal wanted her to know or not, but there was absolutely no reason to let the Cardassian Ambassador know that - although, judging by the conversation so far, he was not underestimating her any more than she was him.
"Ambassador," she began again, her smile reinforced, "I appreciate you dropping by to introduce yourself, but I'm afraid I have a great deal of work to do."
Hydel smiled. "Of course, Lieutenant, it is always a pleasure to spend time in the presence of such a beautiful woman." He said as he stood and shook her hand. "If you ever need any assistance from my government, please do not hesitate to ask." He assured her.
Mikaela stood as she shook the ambassador's hand and politely inclined her head. "You can be sure that I will," she said with a smile.
The Ambassador turned and made his way from her office and back into the corridor where he was greeted by his attache, A'Dan Galen. "Was the meeting fruitful?" the younger Cardassian asked.
"Of course it was, I learned a lot about her and her level of competence." Ambassador Turvan replied. "Unlike other members of her species, she appears to be quite competent." He added as they stepped into the turbolift. "Embassy level" he commanded.
"Do you believe that she will hinder our future plans?" Galen asked as he stepped inside of the lift.
"For her sake, I hope not." The Ambassador replied coldly as the doors hissed shut.
