If she didn't make a point of regular liason with Denoublier and Surzchenko, Eris Tah, secretary of the Promenade Merchants Association, was convinced that she would never be told anything about new arrivals who might benefit from the PMA's services. So, once she had established that in the last seventy two hours not one, but three new business people had arrived, she had swung into action.

Sitting down at her console, the Andorian smoothed her short white bob into place, and pressed the record button. "Good day. I am Eris Tah, secretary of the Promenade Merchants Association and Chamber of Commerce. Membership within our organization has a number of benefits, that regardless of your industry, will make your daily business life here on DS5 smoother, more reliable, and more profitable. To discuss your membership, there is an orientation in the PMA Office, Promenade Level One, Unit 1 North, next to Central Administration, at ten am tomorrow. I look forward to seeing you."

The smile was there, but there was also a hint of command in the invitation. Eris had found from long experience that you had to be firm with the new inhabitants of the station, or they would only end up causing trouble.

The next morning, she arrived early, and set up the room. Three comfortable executive chairs for the invited guests. Smaller, more functional chairs behind them for whatever peons and lackeys were brought in attendance. Eris's own peon, a put upon young lady of indeterminate race, Human, or Betazoid or some off shoot of either that seemed to spring up like weeds all around the quadrant, entered pushing a trolley with an urn, and cups and pastries next to it.

"Everything's ready, Ms Tah." She positioned the trolley. "Padds and styli are on the reception desk, and the presentation has been proofed and loaded."

Eris gave a fractional nod of acknowledgement. "Good. Carry on until they arrive." She strode into the reception hall, and took her seat at the black glass reception desk, and waited.

Ka'er entered the posh-looking office silently, nodding to the secretary. Though his tenure on DS5 wasn't shaping up to be what he'd expected, he was always ready and able to make new contacts. This PMA sounded decently shady enough to service his needs.

He'd arranged for a nice apartment with a good view of the docking area. A tab set up at the Box of Delights, and a sinister business transaction already underway. Maybe this whole Federation Starbase thing wasn't going to be as bad as he'd expected. It was time to meet the neighbors.

James had received the invitation and immediately undertook some research. Needless to say, he showed up at the meeting and chose the seat to the other side of the center chair from Ka'er. This association, was known to cause some serious trouble for any business on DS5 that didn't pay their fees. Although technically legal, their reputation made it clear that this was nothing but an extortion racket.

Two out of three on time. Eris considered that reasonable. "good morning gentlemen. i'll allow our final guest a few more minutes to arrive. In the meantime, please helpyourself to refreshments. There is coffee and freshly baked pastries on the trolley." She raised a blue hand to indicate it and the assistant hovgering nearby ready to serve. "And perhaps we can pass the time by talking a bit about what you would like to gain from being on DS5, so I can tailor the presentation accordingly."

AJ walked into the meeting a few minutes late, that was normal for him. His head pounded from the hangover after last night's drinking. He was quickly followed by his Ferengi partner who had forced him to come. "I have no clue why you dragged me to this." AJ said to the Ferengi as he continued the conversation they had started earlier.

"Are you kidding?" Lobes said back. "In Ferengi space use these all the time. There is nothing like driving a competitor right out of business."

AJ just shook his head. "Yeah but that is extortion the way you do it."

Lobes grinned as he said. "Yeah I know its great. OOOO let's sit here."

AJ quickly followed suit and then started to look around to see what was actually going to happen.

Ka'er gazed condescendingly at the offered coffee. It wasn't Telian coffee, which meant it wasn't any good. The pastry looked similar to Gadarian bread sugar, so Ka'er figured he'd risk it. The stuff turned out to taste nothing like the ethnic breakfast, but it was good nonetheless.

As he sat down, he examined the female on the other side of the desk. She was a species he'd never had the pleasure of encountering before, but he knew that the blue-skinned race was common in the Federation, one of the founding members, if his history was right. He never expected one of those people to be involved in something like this, but here he was, smiling across at the female. At last he spoke, his tone gruff and aggressive.

"Just get this over with," he said. "I have no plans concerning your... organization. I'd like to keep it that way. I'm only here to listen to what you have to say."

The mercenary's terseness did not endear him to Eris, and she gave him a cold smile. "very well gentlemen, I shall begin. Here at the PMA...." The lights dimmed, the screen flickered to life, and the Andorian gave them the slick well rehearsed presentation, that dazzled and sparkled with management speak. But what it really said was:

We have the resources, the knowledge, the contacts, the people. They can be used for you, or against you. Your choice. Choose wisely.

As the lights rose again, Eris surveyed the three men expectantly, her cold and regal bearing showing she expected them to fall into line quickly.

Ka'er's kindly smile was a shocking contrast to the tense hand upon the hilt of his short sword. "Perhaps I should ask you what you expect from me?" he said, his voice level.

"Ten strips of latinum a month, and your advice and assistance, should we call upon it." She replied promptly.

Ka'er considered the female for a long moment. "I have to take this up with... my ship. I'll get back to you very soon."

With his ship? She gave just the briefest flicker of disdain. Perhaps the alien was mad. To discuss such things with inanimate objects. He'd spent too long in space. "Of course," she gave a smile, fake, with a touch of crocodile. "And, you, gentlemen?" she turned to Greyburn and Sinclair

Lobes leaned in close to AJ. “Oh I am in love.”

“What?” AJ said a little too loud.

“Look at her. She is beautiful, smart and has a wonderful business sense.” The Ferengi replied and slowly sighed. “Except for being clothed she is perfect.”

“You seriously need help.” AJ said as he turned his attention to the intimidating woman. “Assistance. What kind of assistance?” He asked and chose to ignore the comment from Lobes about what kind of “assistance” she could offer. “I am still new here and with the big businesses being here I don’t know if there is much profit to be had here.”

"Well, as a small businessman, it is more likely that we can do more for you than you can do for us, but even our small businessmen can render advice on their specialties. Or perhaps your associate can offer advice on how to get the best deal when there are Ferengi in a negotiation perhaps. Or even simply just using your own contacts to make introductions for other Association members. We are a networking organisation after all." She gave him an ingratiating smile

James had watched the video in silence. It was nothing more or less than he had anticipated, and their bribe price was actually fairly reasonable. That also made sense, much more and they risked drawing official attention. After careful deliberation, the bounty hunter rose. He faced his hostess and said, "I don't much like being extorted." That said, he tossed the ten strips on the table and began to leave the room.

It was clear from the dull clatter of metal on the table that Grayburn would cooperate, however reluctantly. He would be one to handle with very long tongs.

"Its hardly extortion Mr Grayburn," She said, outwardly unperturbed. "For example, now you are a paid up member, we will be using all our influence to assist you. For example, we can provide you with a list of known trouble makers and pests and where you can find them. Perhaps some of them will be people you seek?"

James' nod was short, and his voice carried his distaste for this woman very clearly, "If that's all, I'm leaving." With that he walked out of the room, left the oh-so-proper office area and cursed under his breath.

AJ and Lobes got up and moved toward the back of the room. "Thank you for the invite." He said as he said over his shoulder. "We will think about it and get back with you."

She gave a smile that could freeze nitrogen. "Well, don't think too long. We're eager to assist you." The smile said I'm eager to use you and bleed you dry so fast even your ferengi's head will spin
