Incommunicado – Crash
by Commander Isha t'Vaurek
Gabriel's trial had been to Isha as one of many aftershocks that followed an earthquake. She could list the events that had shaken her life lover the last months, each seemingly more intense than the last, but it was the latest official communique from ch'Rihan that revealed that those tremours merely heralded the main quake.
It struck as Isha read the stark cuneiform text that glowed turquoise on the console screen. It built momentum with each and every word.
Isha's life shook.
It was not as though Isha was a stranger to death – for most Rihannsu it was an accepted and inevitable part of life, the last rite of passage, and those who gave their lives in service to the Empire were honoured and lauded; Isha knew that, but somehow today it made no sense to her.
This was the tsunami wave crashing inexorably over her, sweeping away every support and every staple in her life.
Rh'vaurek was dead.
