Unity – A Courtesy Call
by Colonel James Darson & Chief Executive Officer Wayne Bradshaw
ON:
Captain Flynn turned from the turbolift containing Lt. Dunham and began walking through the hustle and bustle of the Promenade. Owing to the explosions that happened last night, it was less crowded than usual, but there were still a healthy number of citizens going around searching for the latest bargains.
As usual, they all gave her a wide berth, probably due to the large gun at her hip and the distinctive fatigues of the Marines. “Figures, when the shit hits the fan they beg us to come and help them, but when everything calms down we’re unapproachable monsters again.”
She turned the corner and ascended a level, heading towards the brand-new office area on the corporate area of the Promenade. She had found out through official channels that a Veteran Marine by the name of Wayne Bradshaw was taking up residence on the station for his business.
Flynn was familiar with the official record, and was very impressed by what she had seen. Multiple medals and commendations, and a final rank of Major General were only some of the accomplishments on the man’s dossier, and as such she felt it her duty as the acting commander of the garrison to give this Mr. Bradshaw a courtesy call.
She entered the office area, still smelling of the fresh paint used to decorate it. She removed her cover and moved to stand in front of the receptionist, “Good morning,” Flynn said in a semi-casual tone, “Marine Captain Miranda Flynn, Acting Garrison Commander. I was hoping that I could have a moment of Mr. Bradshaw’s time.”
The receptionist looked up and gave a knowing smile. "Captain give me a moment but I am sure that Mr. Bradshaw will be happy to meet with you." Said the receptionist as she hit a small comm link ""Mr. Bradshaw there is a young marine captain here who would like to meet with you." She added
"Yes I would love to meet with her." Said Wayne flatly. "You know the drill." He added
"Very well sir I will send her up" Said the receptionist as she closed the link. "Captain with respect please leave your sidearm here and those two men will be happy to escort you to see Mr. Bradshaw." She added
The two men in question where nearly poster boys for the marine corps short tight hair cut's and a military posture that screamed marine.
She gave the two men a wry smile, then turned to back to the receptionist. She drew her sidearm, and went through the habitual motions of removing the magazine, manually removing the chambered round, and giving the gun a once over. When she was satisfied, she placed the gun and magazine in the proffered box and turned it over to the receptionist, and turned to follow the two burly men.
Wayne had been having a rather busy day but that had not stopped him from accessing all the information he could on the senior officers and their respective asistants. To say he was impressed with the captain who would be meeting him in a few moments would be an understatement. He checked the security cam outside his door and walked over to it opening it just as his eldest son was about to ring the chime. "Captain Flynn will you please come in." Said Wayne with a wave of his hand before turning back to her two escorts. "Wayne I still need that report on the security measures for the yard." Said wayne flattly
"You got it dad it will be on your desk tonight." Said Wayne as he and the other gaurd left
Flynn moved to the side to allow the younger man and the original guard to leave. She moved into the office and presented herself to Wayne with an honorary salute in recognition of his former rank, “Mr. Bradshaw,” she said in a warm tone, “Marine Captain Miranda Flynnn. Please allow me, on behalf of the entire 6th Combined Operations Group, and Colonel Darson, to welcome you to Deep Space 5. It is not often that we have such a distinguished veteran Marine take up residence on the station.”
It was not often that he was saluted and considering that he was already standing he stiffened to full attention and snapped off a perfect salute to the younger officer. "Captain I thank you for your courtesy and I welcome you to the offices of BII." Said Wayne calmly "As I am assuming this is a social call and not professional would you care to join me in a drink and we can get to know each other better. I of course want to have a good and open relationship with the active marines on the station it is hard to put aside 40 years service to the corps." He added
Flynn hid a grin as she contemplated the offer. Technically, she was on duty as per regulations in the wake of a terrorist attack, but what the hell. She needed the drink something fierce, “That would be fine sir,” she said with a smile, “I really do need a stiff drink after everything that’s happened in the past couple of days. And yes, this is only a social call for now. When the Colonel gets back, he can engage you in professional talks. I have a feeling he will be most interested in the services that you provide, as well as your ‘perspective’ on things aboard the station.”
Wayne poured a tumbler full of aged scotch and handed her the tumbler. "So what would you like to know. I assume unless the marines have gotten rusty this is a social call but it is also an attempt to get a feel for me. I have no problem giving you some information if you would like but as I am sure you understand there are some things I will not tell you. Also please do not bring up the Chief of security I would rather forget that asshole even exists." Said Wayne lightly as he sat down with his own drink and made himself ready for what would surely be an interesting meeting with a young and strikingly attractive marine. ~Boy they have gotten younger and more beautiful by the year.~ Thought Wayne as he quietly sized up his guest.
Flynn accepted the tumbler gratefully and took a sip, letting the fiery scotch flow down her throat, leaving a slight burning sensation in its wake. She looked up at him, “Wow…that’s some strong stuff. Definitely better than Synthale. We don’t get much of the good stuff around here…aside from the Colonel, and god knows where he gets it from or how he even drinks it. I’ve learned that its better not to ask some questions.
"Trust me there are some secrets that are better left alone. though if you really want some of the good stuff let meknow I might be able to get you a couple bottles." Said Wayne with a grin
“So,” she said curiously as she took another sip, “I’m familiar with the official brief of your business on the station Mr. Bradshaw, but I was hoping you could shed some more light on what exactly you’re doing here.”
"Well DS5 is a decent location for my operations. Long story short BII does just about everything you can think of R and D, weapons developement, shipping, Private defense contractor, starship construction, mining, a cruise line, 3 large brewery's, several wine vineyards, cattle, and gambling. I guess from that list you would have to pick the one or more that you want to discuss. some of course are easier then others to explain and some are of course classified." Said Wayne calmly he would tell her what she wanted to know about almost anything execpt the R and D stuff.
Flynn was about to ask another question when her commbadge chirped, notifying her that her presence was needed back at the Marine HQ. She shook her head mentally and gave a small sigh, the reprieve had been nice while it lasted, but it was time to get back to work.
She stood up and offered her hand to Wayne, “Mr. Bradshaw, Duty calls, so I’m afraid that I must cut out pleasant chat short. However, I believe that there we will be seeing much more of each other in the future…the Marines on this station could use some reliable private backup like yourself, and I’m sure that when the Colonel returns, he will have much to offer you in the way of business opportunities.”
"I look forward to those conversations and I thank you for the compliment." Said Wayne softly as he stood up and shook her hand warmly. "Any time you want to stop in and have a visit you are more then welcome to do so. My door is always open to the Corps." He added
As she turned to leave she looked back and gave the veteran Marine a glowing smile that was possibly influenced by the scotch she had drunk, “It really was very nice talking with you General , “she said, using his former rank in a respectful tone, “I look forward to working with you,” With that, she left to collect her weapon and return to her job filling the Colonel’s shoes.
"Likewise captain." Said Wayne as he watched her leave his office. He was going to have to find some more out about the young lady. She might be young enough to be his daughter but he could not shake the feeling that she was a one of a kind beutiful woman.
