The Commander had cancelled the briefing on the promenade to give the drug trial a chance to show results - 36 hours from now they'd know if the serum would have any beneficial effect.

Lydia Quick sighed, they had six volunteers - two human, two Andorian and two Vulcan - one of each pair would receive a placebo, but the only subject who knew for certain that they were getting the serum was Lieutenant Commander Wyman - the Commander would have sanctioned the test on him alone, but they needed to add a little rigour, still, it was the Engineer everyone would be watching.

She held out a PADD as she approached the biobed, "I need you to sign this release," she said.

Reaching up and taking the device, Wyman gave the contents a cursory glance. "I don't really think a release is necessary. It's not like I'm going to release a gauntlet of Partnership Collective drones on you to litigate Starfleet into oblivion." None the less, he signed off on the release and passed it back.

"Thanks," Lydia replied. "I'll be back shortly."

His legs dangling from the bed like a child in a large chair, Steve clasped his hands and began twiddling his thumbs. "By all means - take your time." he remarked sardonically.

Doctor Quick returned within ten minutes, a pre-loaded hypospray in her grasp. She was still not comfortable with this but the Commander had insisted.

"If you're ready, Lieutenant Wyman?" she asked.

"If this is going to be my final moments, could you at least refrain from demoting me first?" Wyman joked weakly. "Lighten up, Doc - I'm the one who might not see tomorrow, so stop being so morose."

With that he tugged down the collar of his uniform jacket to expose his neck. "Fire when ready." he added, clenching his eyes shut in anticipation.

Damn! She didn't want it to show how nervous she was about this procedure and that had slipped out. "No offence meant Commander, just making sure you're on the ball," she said with calm assurance. "This may make you feel a little drowsy at first. We'll be monitoring your progress closely," she explained as she applied the hypospray.

Lydia stepped back. It was all up to Wyman and the work the labs had put in now.
