Incommunicado – Home Boundary
by Commander Richard Dunham & Lieutenant JG Saria Rex
:: ON ::
The lone communication satellite stationary in the inky blackness of space. Suddenly it swayed from side to side as two Broadsword Multi-role Assault Fighters shot past at high octane speeds. They were on patrol, but they felt very much alone. Communication with the station was almost at nothing and sensors were scrambled, all because of the anomaly. The anomaly, there was no other word to describe it, the scientists were baffled and the computers did not recognize it.
So here they were two space combat fighters having to physically eyeball targets as they came close to DS5 to guide them in manually and they had spotted a shuttle on approach.
Rick just prayed that the pilot knew morse code as he flew his fighter almost directly at him flashing his lights in morse code as a warning. It would not be until he was practically on top of him that his communications systems would actually work.
Saria noticed the two fighters approaching the shuttle. She saw one of them blinking it's navigational lights in a kind of pattern. Then she recognized it: morse code, and old but very useful signaling code from Earth.
"Morse code" The pilot said. "They seems to sign that communications are scrambled due the anomaly."
"Doesn't surprise me..." Saria replied. "Anomalies usually do."
The fighter then sharply turned around, flying in front of the shuttle and signing to follow them. In the distance, Saria could see DS5, the massive space station floating in the middle of darkness. The pilot followed the fighter navigating them toward the station, while the other fighter flew along the shuttle. Saria looked trough the window, and saw the crew of the fighter behind the glass. Saria smiled.
Rick gave a thumbs up as a informal hello, he then flew his fighter close to the shuttle and tried the comms. =^= unidentified shuttle this is Lt Cdr Dunham, Alpha wing. You are approaching Deep Space five air space, place slow to half impulse speed and prepared to be guided in. Please also transmit clearance codes and purpose of visit =^=
=^= This is Commander Pella, slowing down to half impulse speed, clearance code 101KS-304. I'm here to transfer Ensign Gott, Lt. Cmd. Brett and Lt. JG Rex to DS5. Waiting for further instructions. =^=
Saria saw the pilot of the fighter giving a thumbs up. Saria smiled and waved back.
"Commander, do you know the pilot of the fighter next us?"
"Oh, yes. Lt. Cmd. Dunham, he guided me in a few times. Pretty good pilot, I must say." Commander Pella said. "Why don't you give him a drink when we're on the station?"
"Sounds like a great idea, sir." Saria smiled.
=^= Ok. come to point Zero Five at six degrees elevation and follow me in to docking bay Seven. =^= docking bay seven was one of the smaller private starfleet hanger bays, it was predominantly and part of fighter control and was a rapid launch platform for Razor interceptors, but with the anomaly causing havoc it was now designated for starfleet shuttles to land in, to help curtail the ever increasing traffic around deep space five due to the comms black out.
The small cluster of craft banked and headed towards the station. Soon they were landing on the deck together.
The pilot navigated the shuttle into the docking bay, and landing softly next to the fighter that just landed. The shuttle came down with a thump, and the engines were turned off.
"End of the line... Deep Space 5!" Commander Pella laughed, and walked to the cargo hold. Saria and the other crewmembers stood up and grabbed their gear from the cargo hold. Saria fished her trunk from the hold, and picked her duffle bag from the shelf. The door in front of her opened, and the crewmembers stepped out. Saria was already in awe of the size of the docking bay.
She saw the fighter next to her, while the pilot stepped out of it.
"Kind of awe inspiring isn't it" said Rick walking over to the Lieutenant. Taking his helmet off he flashed her a smile. He put the helmet under one arm and offered his other gloved flight suited hand to shake "Lieutenant Commander Dunham. First time here?"
"First time anywhere near the Romulans, for sure." Saria joked, and shook the Lieutenant's hand. She smiled. "My previous host only used to work near the Cardassian border during the Dominion war."
"Host?" Rick puzzled very briefly before he saw the spots on her neck that had been up to this point hidden by her long blond hair "ahhhh" he said with understanding "your joined" he stated in a friendly reassuring manner. "Well don't worry we have plenty of cardassians here to make you feel at home" he said jokingly.
"I heard so, yes." Saria laughed. "Seems my hair is covering my true identity." She studied him very carefully, from the black hair till the slighty stubbled chin. And then his grey eyes.
"You would be scared if you knew my real age, though." She said, tapping at her belly, where her symbiont was located.
"yeahhh" he said agreeing with the Lieutenant but still remaining a little skeptical "I must admit I do not really get the whole symbiont thing. Your what 22-23...?" he asked politely and a little tentatively, after all he did not want to insult the lady by getting her name wrong "your host of course..." he continued "but your symbiont can be hundreds of years old, but you still remain the same age right?" he was confused.
"It's difficult indeed. This body is 26 years at the moment, but my symbiont is merely 1200 years old. You could see it as two seperate computers, working for the same task. You you're actually talking to both my host and symbiont. Although, I remain classified as 26 years old by Starfleet." She said, smiling. "Maybe we should have dinner, or go to the bar. I can tell you some highlights of my previous hosts then." She said.
The way she explained it had a familiar style to it, something he had heard before from other officer of this ilk. "Your science officer aren't you" he said smiling. Rick powers of deduction were actually not that great, the color of her uniform collar was a dead give away to. "Dinner or Bar sounds good Lieutenant?" he did not actually know her name yet.
"Lieutenant Rex. Assistant Science officer, indeed." She smiled. "Dinner would be perfect, I just need to bring my luggage to my quarters." She said. "Oh, and by the way, you're a fine pilot!"
She grabbed the trunk and the duffle bag, and looked at the Lieutenant again.
"Thanks" he said with a blush and smile. He started heading towards the locker rooms and shouted back over to her "We can take the opportunity to talk shop, as you may of noticed on your way in here we have a few problems at the moment that require your expertise." In fact they really needed a science officers experience on this and Rick was worried about his fighters out there in the black and hoped this officer was professionally capable.
"We'll do that, just hail me when and where, and I'll have my science kit wth me." She shouted back, heading toward her quarters. The doors swooshed open, and she stepped in. The quarters were even bigger than she had in mind. She dropped her luggage and walked to the replicator. "One Cardassian Red Leaf tea" She said to the replicator.
